Can I Put a Rug on Carpet?

"When placing a rug on carpet, focus on color and pile height."

Rugs on carpet can be tricky.

The philosophy of creating a space or area loosely by placing a rug under a seating area is ideal for spaces like bonus and living rooms but getting the piles to play nicely with each other can be difficult.

In the picture shown above, we used a low pile, tightly looped broadloom wall-to-wall that created an even, more consistent surface to work with. On this type of carpet we paired it with a medium height, loose pile, super soft shag in a white that was an excellent juxtaposition to it's counterpart.

Color is also something to keep in mind. If you want the rug to pop and create some drama, opt for a tone that ties into the carpet but is several shades lighter or darker than the majority of carpet installed. If you're into a more subtle look, focus on texture and pile height with a color/shade that's only one or two shades different to clearly mark the difference in area without drawing too much attention to itself.
