We often hear folks, especially from out of state, ask us: “Do Alturas Homes have HERS index scores?” While Alturas Homes does have HERS index ratings, we want to answer your questions and ensure that energy conservation is still a top priority.
What is the HERS index?
HERS stands for the “Home Energy Rating System.” This nationally-recognized index rates homes from 0 to 150 on energy efficiency and consumption. The lower the number, the more energy-efficient the home is. Similar to Energy Star, RESNET partners with companies to certify raters around the country to give homes HERS index scores.
What does a HERS index score mean?
The HERS index rates a score of 100 to homes built to the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code, which is the standard starting point of energy efficiency. A typical resale home scores 130 and is 30% less energy-efficient than a standard new home. A score of 0 (Net Zero) signifies that a home creates as much energy as it consumes through renewable resources and excellent construction.

Alturas Homes currently does not use RESNET raters to score our homes. Why don’t we use HERS index scores? There are several downsides, including an extensive time allocation to inspections and increased cost to buyers. Also, the Boise area has limited access to RESNET certified raters and contractors.
Regardless of labels or ratings, we never stray from high-quality construction. Alturas Homes keeps up to date on the current Idaho residential building regulations, which follow the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code.
